Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. Hebrews 2:1
Getting off track is something that is very easy to do, especially if one has to go for a long distance or a long time. The farther one has to go the easier it is to get just a little bit to a long way off track. People often get distracted in what they were doing when around others or even just driving down the road. Something catches their attention and their focus changes and danger often occurs.
The author of Hebrews, after pointing out the superiority of Jesus, tells the people that they must pay close attention to everything that they have heard so that they do not drift away.
Floating on water can be relaxing and very comfortable. However, in water that has a current, one can slowly, but steadily begin to float the wrong direction or too far. The only way to stay on track is to constantly check where one is at and where one is going.
Many believers in the church have drifted off track in their walk with God. Some are off track because they have begun to believe false lies of the world and gave up the doctrines of the Bible. Others have been distracted with the trials of life and focus on those trials more than on to God and His word.
The only way one can keep from drifting away from God is to stay focused upon Him and His word. This cannot be only once a week on Sundays with the pastor’s sermon, but on a daily basis. Often it needs to be moment by moment to stay focused when temptation rises up.
One stays on course by staying in His word and continual prayer.
How many times have you been somewhere and somehow got distracted in what you are doing? It is something that can easily happen. In the same way, it can be easy for you to get distracted and drift away from God in this fallen world. The world is trying to pull you away from Him. Spend time daily in His word and talking to God. Be led by the Holy Spirit in all that you do. Pay close attention to what you know is God’s truth so that you do not drift away as others have done.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know God’s truth; that you will remember God’s truth; that you will not drift away from God; that God will touch your life when you begin to drift apart from Him; and that you always draw closer to God in every area of your life.
