But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: Titus 2:1
It is very easy for most people to speak what they are thinking or feeling. The world is quick to tell people to speak up for themselves and how they feel. Personal feelings are what are important, regardless of what the facts are. Contradictions in what is said are acceptable, as long as one feels that way. While on the surface of things this looks good, it will cause an unstable foundation that will crumble and fall apart with time.
Right after speaking against idle talk, Paul tells Titus to speak only things that are good for sound doctrine.
Every person has a doctrine or a philosophy of life and how life should be lived, whether they call it that or not. As one talks about what is on one’s mind, it will bring out that philosophy revealing what one’s doctrine in life is.
Without a solid foundation, people will speak about things that flow like the waves of the ocean in a storm, every which way in chaos. Each day things may be different. People spend their time talking about things that do not really matter in the larger scheme of life.
Rather than speaking in chaos, believers are to speak with a sound doctrine in mind. Doctrine, being what one believes and follows, should be solidly built upon God’s word and truth. Words spoken should reflect what God would say. He provides a solid foundation that does not change with the shifting sands of the mind or trends of this world. It is the same yesterday, today and forever.
As believers speak with sound doctrine, it will quiet the world and not allow the world to have anything to say against them that is truthful.
Whether you like to talk or not, what you say should be important and built upon a solid foundation. God’s word should permeate your life so much that your words reveal His sound doctrine in your life. Do not allow yourself to get caught up in speaking of things that tear down the foundation Jesus has built up in your life. Have a solid doctrine that is built upon God’s word and speak in such a way that is proper for that doctrine.
Are the words you are speaking what is built on the solid foundation of God’s word and doctrine?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will give you the words to speak; that your words will be built upon the doctrine of God’s truth; that you will be built upon the solid foundation Jesus has given you; and your words will reflect God’s character.
