Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” John 13:10
Occasionally a person will get filthy dirty and needs to take a bath to wash from head to toe. More often, in between baths or showers, one must wash the hands and face to just clean up a little. Washing in this way can occur multiple times each day. It becomes important as to how much needs to be washed and how often, depending upon what has been done.
John records when Jesus began to wash the disciples’ feet that He told the disciples that if they have already taken a bath, they only need to wash the feet because the rest of their body is clean. He also said not all of them were clean.
Going from day to day, many people work inside jobs in which they do not get covered in filthy dirt. Others work outside and get visible dirt all over themselves. Both need to clean up, but in different ways and levels. This type of dirt is the physical dirt that all can see.
Inside a person there is another dirt that most cannot see. This dirt is sin. Turning to Jesus for forgiveness and choosing to believe in Him, gets a person cleansed from the inside out. All the filth of sin is removed.
Yet, each day the person walks through life and will occasionally step into sin, getting a little dirty again. One does not need to go through the whole process of being saved again but must repent of those sins of the day. God is able to wash away those few sins without a complete new washing of the entire body.
You will have times in which you step back into sin throughout your day. This does not mean you have lost your salvation but do need a cleansing of that part of your life. Be willing to repent of those few sins and seek God’s cleansing in that area of your life.
Do not allow yourself to be one of those who refuses to be cleansed of all sin. Remaining in the filth of sin will cause you to not be clean and ultimately be cast out into outer darkness for not being clean before God.
Are you clean before God today?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will repent of all sins before God; that you will strive to live for God daily; that you will remain clean in the washing of the blood of Jesus; and that God will guide you in fleeing the filth of sin.
