The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.” Luke 23:36-37
Making fun of other people is a very common event seen and heard. Comedians often make their living with mocking other people and situations. Sometimes it is done just as fun, but often there is a seriousness behind the words being said in cutting others down. Families and relationships are often destroyed due to mocking that is taken too far or done too much on a regular basis.
Luke records that as Jesus was hanging on the cross some soldiers chose to mock Jesus and telling Him that if He really was the King, He should save Himself.
The world likes to cut down others that they do not understand or agree with. Joking in a crude manner is the common way of doing it so that it is always believed to be done in fun, rather than with ill intent.
Rather than believing the words of Jesus, the world likes to mock Him. Movies and television shows mock Jesus in making believers look crazy. Speakers will say that Jesus is not really real because of all the chaos and violence going on in the world.
Inside the church there are some who will also choose to mock Jesus. They try to tell God exactly how He must act or what He must do, or else say He is not really loving and caring. Others will walk in sin on purpose, while claiming to be a follower of Jesus.
God works in mysterious ways that the world cannot understand. Believers are to trust what God is doing and the way He is doing it, rather than mocking Jesus, His word and His followers.
It is easy for you to see how the world is quick to mock believers and Jesus in many different ways. Examine your life and see if you are also mocking Jesus by your words, actions or lack of actions. Do not allow yourself to fall into the same trap as the world. Does what you are saying and doing build Jesus up or cut Him down?
Live your life, holy and righteous, before God and others, trusting God’s word and actions in your life and in the world around you.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal ways you may be mocking Him; that you will believe the words and actions of God; that you will lift Christ with honor and respect for all the world to see; and that you will see God’s salvation at work in your life and in those around you.
