Matthew 12:34 What Is Coming Out Of Your Heart?

Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak of good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Matthew 12:34

Thousands of words are spoken everyday by people all over the world. Often the words spoken are done with very little thinking about what is being said. Along with not really thinking about what is being said, people are quick to say things in the heat of the moment that they often later regret. Emotions will often rule what is being said in the moment.

Matthew records Jesus speaking against the Pharisees in asking them how they can speak about good things when they are evil. He said that what the heart is filled with is what the mouth will speak about.

The world claims to speak about love and good things. As these claims are made, the world talks about promoting things that are sinful against God, things that will bring about death in the end. All these words are what are hidden in their heart.

Throughout the church people are quick to speak many different words. On the surface, when things are going well, they appear to be believers and following God’s ways. In the same manner as the world, when things are going roughly, many will quickly speak things that are harmful and against God’s way of doing things.

Deep down in their heart, they are filled with the desires and thoughts of the world rather than the desires and thoughts of God. What is in the heart rises to the top and comes out of the mouth.

Believers are to fill their hearts and minds with the word of God, not the sinful things of this world. Every word and thought should reflect what comes from God, not the world.

Take note of the things you say in the sudden heat of the moment. Are they words that reflect the words of God or the sinful ways of this world? Whichever words they are define what is actually in your heart.

Spend time filling your heart and mind with the word of God. Fill it to overflowing so that when you speak, in general or in the heat of the moment, you speak the words of God that honor Him and build His kingdom. Do not give room for the sinful words of death to fill your heart and come out of your mouth.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that your heart will be filled with the words of God; that you will speak words that honor God; that God will give you strength to overcome the words of death; and that God will fill your life with His presence.
