Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
Carrying a physically heavy load can be very difficult and wearying. The longer one has to carry a heavy load, the harder it will become to keep carrying it. This occurs regardless of how strong a person is if the weight is heavy enough. People understand this very well with physical loads and will not carry them as long, but this is forgotten when the load being carried is a non-physical load, one that is mental or spiritual.
Matthew records Jesus telling everyone who is working hard and carrying a heavy load to come to Him and receive rest from Him.
People like to think that they can do everything on their own. They want to be independent. While this may work in some areas of life, there are others in which they need help.
Men, and some women, will often try to lift things on their own, that are way too heavy, that they should not be lifting. Doing so will often cause physical problems in their body.
In the same way, people will carry loads in their hearts and minds that they should not be carrying. Many will hold on to sin thinking that they are doing well and do not need any help. Others will try to work at getting rid of sin by doing good deeds, rather than trusting Jesus to remove them. Both burdens are too heavy to carry.
Believers are those who choose to go to Jesus and give Him their work and load that they are carrying. By His sacrifice upon the cross, Jesus is able to remove those heavy loads and give the believer rest of mind and soul, and an abundant life is received without the heavy load of sin.
You have had times in life in which you have needed help to carry a heavy load. While you may be willing to get help to carry a physically heavy load, you must also be willing to get help to carry the spiritual load. Give the load of sin to Jesus to take and remove for all eternity. It will lighten the load you are bearing and give you the opportunity to live a full and abundant life. This will be the spiritual rest that the world cannot give you.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will go to Jesus with your heavy loads in life; that you will trust Jesus to carry your heavy load of sin; that you will know the rest that Jesus will provide; and that you will live trusting Jesus with your whole life.
