For because you have trusted in your works and your treasures, you shall be taken. And Chemosh shall go forth into captivity, his priests and princes together. Jeremiah 48:7
The focus of many people all around the world is gain more things and to be someone special. Many will work hard to become the best in their field of expertise or in their workplace. Others will work hard in the workplace to be able to purchase bigger and better things. They want the newest and best of everything.
Jeremiah quotes God in coming against the nation of Moab. He condemns Moab for trusting in their own works and treasures. He says that their priests and princes will go into captivity.
Having things and position is very important to most people. They also want to earn it themselves without help from others or depending upon anyone else for what they have. Thousands of self-help books are available for nearly any subject one wants to learn or do on one’s own.
With all of this self-reliance thoughts people have this bleeds over into the Christian life and way of thinking. People want to please God so that they can enter heaven.
Many will do various ministries, not because God called them to it, but because they want to ensure their place in heaven. These people tend to trust in their own works and material things they have, rather than Christ, yet still claim to believe in Jesus. Living in this way will cause a person to be captive to vain thinking and the ways of the world, rather than trusting the work of Jesus, and in the end will be in Hell.
Believers cannot earn forgiveness nor heaven. It is only a gift of God through faith, which He has given. It is by the work of Jesus shedding His blood on the cross that one can be saved.
You have things that you have done in your life and are proud of. There are also things you strive to do to make yourself look better and be better. Do not put your trust in things, nor yourself. Do not work as the world works.
Believe on the blood of Jesus for your salvation. All you need to strive for is to be more like Jesus and obey all the commands God gives you. Do the work of God and believe in Jesus and you will be saved. Do everything as unto God and for His kingdom, not for self.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal areas in your life in which you are trusting yourself, your works or material things more than God; that you will put all your trust in the work of Jesus; and that you will not be captive to earning your way into heaven.
