Jeremiah 24:2 Which Fig Are You?

One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first ripe; and the other basket had very bad figs which could not be eaten, they were so bad. Jeremiah 24:2

Fruit is something that people like to eat all over the world. When fruit is harvested from the plant, it is always sorted between the fruit that turned out good and the fruit that did not turn out good. The bad fruit is thrown out as worthless and of no value to anyone. The good fruit is eaten and enjoyed. God had shown Jeremiah two baskets of figs.

One carried very good figs to be eaten and one with very bad figs that could not be eaten. Later God tells Jeremiah that these represent people who obey or do not obey Him, are to be kept and blessed or to be thrown out.

People are like plants in that they produce some type of fruit. Every action, word or thought produces something in themselves and in others. Every person begins in this world living without God and as a bad fruit. They live for themselves and for sinful activities, no matter how “good” their life looks. They are destined for destruction.

At the moment a person chooses to repent and believe in Jesus, that person begins to be able to produce good fruit for God. The basis of all this good fruit is obedience to God. Through His word and Holy Spirit, God will guide the believer in what to do to produce good fruit in one’s life.

Too often, many believers choose to quit producing the good fruit God desires of them. They choose to walk back into sin and become a very bad fig that needs to be tossed out, just as the Israelites had done. Believers need to ask themselves which fig they are today?

Going through your day, you will always have many different actions that you do. Each and every action and word you do is a production of some type of fruit or represents what type of fruit you are. As a believer you are to bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit in your life. Your life is to be a very good fig that is desirable and of value. Do not allow yourself to fall into sinful ways and become a very bad fig that is to be tossed out. Be the good fig that God can use to build His kingdom.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal the fruit you have in your life; that God will guide you in bearing good fruit; that you will obey God in every area of your life; and that you will be a good fig for God to use.
