The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: “Have you seen what backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there played the harlot.” Jeremiah 3:6
As a person grows older, they usually begin to mature and act differently than as a child. They learn how to act as an adult and give up childish ways. Some, however, go back to acting like a child, pouting, throwing a temper tantrum and goofing off in ways that an adult should be beyond.
Jeremiah records God asking him if he can see how Israel is backsliding. They walked away from God and went up to the high mountains and played the harlot with false gods.
In a marriage the couple are to be married and faithful to each other for life. They are not to go back to others and be intimate with anyone else. Although this is supposed to happen, people all around the world are constantly choosing to be intimate with someone other than their spouse. They have gone back to ways prior to marriage.
Every person who has chosen to believe in Jesus has entered into a marriage contract with God. He is to be their only God, with no other gods in their lives.
However, many who are in the church have become just like Israel and become a harlot with other gods. When they leave church on Sunday, they go out and worship other gods, gods of money, sex, drugs, immorality, violence, hatred, greed, jealousy, improper speech and many others. And all this is done while supposedly being committed to God.
Believers are to be sold out completely to God and God alone. They are not to backslide and go back into a sinful lifestyle but to flee all sin and false gods.
Whether you are physically married or not to a person, you are married to either this world or to God. As you live your life you have to make a choice as to whether you will follow God or this world. If you have chosen to follow God, do not allow yourself to backslide and be a harlot with the world, living in the sinful ways of the world. Walk in the Spirit of God and obey His commands. Be like Jesus in every area of your life, rather than like the world.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will be committed to God; that you will be faithful to God; that you will not backslide into the ways of the world; and that you will honor God with your whole life.
