She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. Proverbs 31:12
All around the world there are millions of marriages beginning each day and millions that are destroyed in divorce each day. The divorces that occur are often because one or both spouses have chosen to do something evil or wrong inside the marriage. Selfish choices are made to please self first and foremost over the other, causing disunity and breakdown of the love that was originally in place bringing the two together. Divorce has become a common and expected result of marriages.
King Lemuel finishes out the book of Proverbs talking about a virtuous wife. He says that this wife will do good to her husband and not evil every day of her life.
From the beginning in the Garden of Eden, selfishness has been a part of the human walk. Satan focused on what Adam and Eve did not have to get them to sin against God and do what they were told not to do. They wanted things for themselves that were meant to be for God alone.
Being selfish makes one sin against God. It puts self above God and others.
In the majority of marriages that break down it is because of selfishness of one or the other. Instead of doing good at all times, people choose to do things for self to the point it harms the other. Actions like this occur with both the husbands and the wives.
Although this scripture verse is looking specifically at the wife, it can also apply to the husband as well. Both spouses need to be willing to do good and not evil all the days of one’s life. This is seeking to do what God wants them to do in order to show true love for the spouse or anyone else. It is about God and others first over self.
Whether you are married or not, you have choices to make in how you work with others. Everything that you do with someone else, whether a spouse, co-worker, friend or anyone else, should be good, not evil. Do not allow self to get in the way and cause you to do harm or evil towards another. Act and speak in a way that represents God and His holiness, not the sinful ways being pushed by this fallen world. Do good all the days of your life.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal how you can do good to and for others; that you will act and speak in the holiness of God; and that God will reveal evil acts you are doing that need to be changed.
