Proverbs 18:9 A Great Destroyer

He who is slothful in his work is a brother to him who is a great destroyer. Proverbs 18:9

Workplaces are filled with all types of people. While most will do the basic job required, there are always a few that will go way above and beyond the basic requirements and a few who will be lazy and not even do the minimum work. Those who are lazy will cause more harm for everyone else. The rest of the workers must work twice as hard or else the job fails to be completed properly and everyone loses out.

Solomon says that the person who is slothful or lazy in his work is a brother to the one who is a great destroyer.

Laziness is something that can be found everywhere all over the world. It is found in the workplaces, schools, homes and everywhere else. People want more for less. They want to work as little as possible and get as much gain as is possible.

Destruction begins to occur when one is lazy because it keeps the job from being completed. Weeds overtake a garden when weeding is not done. Job demands are not met on time so then contracts are not fulfilled.

Believers who become lazy and don’t take time to read and study the Bible and pray, begin to fall prey to temptation. They pull others down by their false representation of Jesus in their lives.

Instead of being slothful, believers are to be like God. He does His work and keeps doing His work. One is to lean on the power and strength of the Holy Spirit to complete the task God has called one to do in the time and manner God has set up.

Just as God is a Creator, believers should create, not destroy.

Regardless of whether you have a physical job or not, you have a work to do. It may be taking care of family, or maintaining your place of residence. At a minimum you are to be a witness for God wherever you are, and you are to grow in the Lord more like Jesus every day. These things take work.

Do not allow yourself to become slothful and put off what needs to be done or to cut corners where there should be no corners. Be the hard worker God has created you to be just like Jesus was and is.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know the work God has called you to do; that you will lean on God for strength to do what He has called you to do; and that God will keep you from being lazy in anything you need to do.

  1. How about people with disabilities/illnesses who are not tolerated at work place? Where could they go to work? For example, cancer patients going through the process of dying, how could they be of any use? Instead of accepting what happened to them and what is to come, how could they contribute to the Kingdom of God?

    1. Good questions to be asked. It is sad to say that many places are unwilling to work with people with disabilities. However, work may not always be done in a place in which there is physical pay. Cleaning one’s own house is work, caring for children is work, cooking a meal is work and all these things could be done for free.
As for people who have a terminal illness, they may be able to read to someone, talk on the phone to someone, pray with others. The idea is to find where God can use one to do something. Everyone can be a witness for God to someone. Everyone can do something; it is just a matter of determining what and where. Seeking God can give those answers.
I trust this helps you with these tough questions. Have a blessed day in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
