Psalm 147:10-11 What God Takes Pleasure In

He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in who hope in His mercy. Psalm 147:10-11

People will often get very excited in seeing someone or some animal with great strength or abilities. Seeing someone with extraordinary strength does not occur very often, so when it does people take pleasure in seeing it. This often occurs when the person being admired has nothing to do with the one doing the admiring.

The psalmist talks about how God does not take pleasure in the strength of a horse or the legs of a man but takes great pleasure in those who fear Him and put their hope in His mercy.

The majority of religions in the world have a god that takes pleasure in what people do. Followers of these false gods must do more in order to be liked and find the favor of their gods. False gods are made to be just like people in that people also desire to follow others who are strong.

God knows that people are weak and unable to do everything He wants them to do without His strength. He is looking for people who recognize this and are humble enough to look to Him for what is needed.

This begins with a fear of Him, a respect that He is God and has absolute authority and all power. Once a person fears God, that person will also need to put all one’s hope in God’s mercy. God has the right do destroy anyone who has sinned against Him, but He does not in His great love and mercy.

In His mercy, God has given everyone Jesus to remove all sin and give eternal life. God takes great delight in the person who puts His hope in Jesus–His mercy.

Take a moment to think about what God has a right to do to you because of any one sin in your life. Now realize how many times you have sinned against God and what that allows God to do. Instead of destroying you, God has mercy upon you and offers forgiveness and life.

Fear or respect God for who He is and what He has the right to do to you, but then put your hope in His great mercy that He has shown through Jesus Christ. Give God great pleasure in you.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will fear God’s judgement; that you will know God’s great mercy; that you will put your hope in His mercy; and that God will find pleasure in you.
