“Cursed is anyone who makes an idol–a thing detestable to the Lord, the work of skilled hands–and sets it up in secret.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!” Deuteronomy 27:15
What happens behind closed doors is often thought of as one’s own private affairs and that no one else should be concerned about it. It is behind the closed doors that many people reveal their true desires. In their hearts they will often set up idols in their lives and worship them above God.
People have the freedom to do what they desire and believe that there should be no outside consequences.
Moses told the people that anyone who sets up an idol in secret is cursed and the people agreed.
An idol is anything that is put up before God, whether a physical or non-physical thing. While the majority of people around the world do not set up a physical idol to worship it, most do make idols out of things they have both physical and non-physical.
Very few people want to be cursed. They desire to have blessings and favor. This is especially true of believers who have chosen to follow God. Yet, many will allow idols to be set up in their private lives behind closed doors.
Things or people are allowed to take the place of God. More time, money and effort are placed in these things than with God. Most often these things are set up as idols in the heart and mind, rather than in the open on a mantel.
According to God’s word one is cursed if he has allowed this or done this in his life. God’s hand of favor is lifted from the believer who has allowed an idol in his life.
God should be the one to take priority over everything and everyone else in the life of the believer, never allowing an idol to take His place.
As a believer, God should take first place in every area of your life. Put God on the throne, not some false idol in your life. Nothing in this life should take more of your time and effort than God. If anything does, it is an idol, and you will be cursed by God.
Ask God to reveal to you if you have any idols in your life. Cast out any idols in your life and worship and serve God alone.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will worship God alone; that God will give you strength to remove any idols in your life; that you will be blessed by God, not cursed; and that your life will be one wholly dedicated to God.
