Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?” Genesis 4:6
Anger is something that appears to be nearly everywhere someone goes. People get angry with lines at the store, they get angry at slower traffic, they get angry with the cost of things, they get angry at the words others say and they get angry at many other things. Movies and songs are filled with anger.
Along with being angry about the things of this world, many people get angry with God. Anger seems to dominate the minds of many people.
God had accepted the offering from Cain, so Cain was very angry. God asks him why he was angry.
Being angry does not just appear with unbelievers, but with many believers in the church also. Many can be seen being angry at other believers, angry at the pastor, angry at God and angry at many of the same things that the world is angry about.
Joy has often departed the hearts and minds of many believers. This most often occurs because people are focused upon self and not the other person. In other words, they are not doing what is right, just as Cain did not do what was right before God.
Every person must ask himself why he is angry. He must seek to get to the bottom of his anger, if it is of God or of selfish sin.
Choosing to do what is right will lead a person to love his enemies, do good to those who harm him, forgive, and trust God in all things. When all of these things occur, the joy of the Lord will return and fill his heart and mind. The peace of God will envelope his heart and mind.
Do you often find yourself angry? Angry with situations? Or others? Or God?
Instead of looking outside at others and situations or God, look inside of yourself. Examine yourself and see if you are doing what is right. Do not allow anger to dominate in your heart and mind. Unchecked anger will cause you to sin against God.
Getting rid of anger starts with fully trusting God and His word. He tells you how to live your life and know His peace and joy that passes all understanding.
By His Holy Spirit you can have the strength to overcome sinful anger and fill it with God’s love.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know the love and peace of God in your heart of God; that you will only be angry with what God is angry about; and that God will strengthen you to get rid of sinful anger.
