They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity–for”people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 2 Peter 2:19
People in every nation around the world love to be able to do, say and go where they like without major restrictions. Some nations are more free than others.
Those in much more free nations feel that they can do whatever they want without any negative repercussions. Some believe that anything is permissible and should not be restricted in any way. While they appear to be completely free, most are being deeply held in slavery.
Peter, in talking about people following their own desires, says that they promise freedom, but are slaves to depravity or sin, because they have been mastered by the sin.
At the same time that many people appear to be free, they are actually mastered by something. Often they are addicted to something that is not always good, feeling that they must have or do something or else life is not good.
Sin looks and sounds good on the outside. It appears as if the one who sins is really living life. Complications and difficulties are covered up with no regard to the future. The hearts of people run after sin as though there is no problem.
Many in the church have bought into the lies of the world and are chasing after sin, thinking that they are free. In so doing, they are binding themselves up to the slavery of sin and depravity.
Strong, true believers will flee sin and seek God to break off the bondages of sin in their lives. They will see that true life is one that is in bondage to God, who brings life, not to selfish desires that bring about death. They will be mastered only by God, not man, things or sin.
You, like most people, like to have freedom to be able to choose what you think, say or do. The world is going to try and trap you in the lies of false freedom.
Seek God and His word to know what real freedom is. Allow God and His Holy Spirit to be master over your life, guiding you and strengthening you to live a holy and righteous life in Christ Jesus.
Resist the temptation to follow the world and its depravity and sin.
Who or what has mastered you and your life?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know how God wants you to live your life; that God will open your eyes to the lies of the world; that you will not be a slave to sin; and that you will be mastered by God alone.
