We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. Hebrews 2:1
Traveling a long distance takes focus to stay on track to get where one is going. It is easy to take a wrong turn and begin heading the wrong direction.
Using a GPS system will help a person keep from getting off track. It is constantly paying attention as to where the person is, in order to keep him going correctly. It will immediately call for correction if there is a deviation on the course.
After talking about how Jesus is superior, the writer states that they must pay careful attention to what they have heard, so that they do not drift away.
Life as a believer is a journey that usually will take many years to complete. One is traveling through a land that does not believe in the same journey and will do everything they can to cause him to deviate from the course.
Each and every day there will be temptations to sin and to disobey God. Every sin allowed, is a deviation from the course God has planned for the believer. It is not the best route to take in life.
Most people know better than to take a sudden hard turn to the left or right into deep sin, but many fall prey to little changes. They just play with a little sin, a once in a while lie, gossip, jealousy, or some other sin. As they dabble a little in those sins, they decide to go in deeper, drifting off course into more and more sin, until they are way off course.
The believer must pay close attention to what God’s word says and how God wants him to live. He must choose to stay on course and not drift away from God and His word.
As a believer you are on a journey through this life that God has laid out for you. This journey may last a few days or many years.
God has already laid out in His word how He wants you to live your life and make it through this journey. Take time daily to pay close attention to how God wants you to make this journey and do not allow yourself to drift off course into sin away from God.
Draw closer to God, not drifting away.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know the path God has for you; that you will live according to God’s plan; that you will allow the Holy Spirit to guide you; and that God will keep you from drifting away from the course He has you on.
