Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 2 Timothy 2:16
The majority of people all over the world love to talk. They love to talk about all types of topics that are of great interest to them.
Most often people like to talk about themselves and what they are doing or what they think about a situation. It is common to hear someone talk about the local, national or world events that are occurring.
Some of these topics directly involve the individual, while many do not have any direct effect. Some are uplifting, while most are not.
Paul tells Timothy to avoid any godless chatter. The reason to avoid it, is that anyone who does it will become more ungodly.
When a person is talking, he is always talking about what is on his heart and mind. It is the process of revealing what is in the heart to others who are willing to listen.
God has given every believer a commission to be His witness. In order to be a witness, one must talk about what he has witnessed. For the believer, this means he must talk about what he has witnessed that God has done. His topic of discussion will be on God and the things of God.
Many in the church have chosen to talk about the topics that the world is discussing–the latest movie out, the latest sports team, wars, politics, local events, and more. Most of these things have absolutely nothing to do with God. While not inherently bad in and of themselves, these topics can lead a person away from what God wants them to talk about.
The believer needs to have God in his heart so much, that when he speaks he is talking about God and the things of God.
Take note of what is your primary topics of discussion from day to day. Realize that what you are primarily talking about is what is in your heart and is your desire.
Allow God and His purpose for your life to become your main focus. Saturate your heart and mind with God’s word and God’s mission. As you do this, it will keep you close to God and from all sinful ways and thinking. It will allow you to be His witness as He has called you and all believers to be.
What are you talking about? What is on your heart?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will have the things of God in your heart and mind; that you will be willing to talk about what God is doing and wanting; that you will be a witness of Jesus in your talking; and that you will stay close to God in all you say and do.
