1 Timothy 5:19 Be Careful What You Pass On

Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. 1 Timothy 5:19

Accusations are something that can be found every where there or more than a few people gathered together. There is always someone being accused of something.

Every day courts are filled with cases of someone accusing someone else of something done wrong. Judges are trying to determine who is right and who is wrong.

At the same time, lunchrooms and other places are filled with people talking about accusations against someone.

In a section in which Paul gives Timothy some advice as to how to act with other people, he now gives advice on what to do about hearing an accusation against an elder. He tells Timothy not to entertain the accusation, unless it has been brought by several witnesses.

Just as the world is full of people accusing others of some wrong doing, the church is also filled with the same types of accusation.

In the secluded space of their homes, people hear some accusation about another member of the church doing some sinful activity. Instead of trying to verify the truth of what was said, many spread that accusation as truth.

Suddenly people begin to disrespect or trust an elder because of some accusation that may be true or it may be false. Men with their ministries are suddenly destroyed, because of lack of verification and only one person’s false words or interpretation of something that occurred.

People will hear of accusations against elders or others in the church. Instead of just suddenly believing it and destroying a person and his ministry, one must work to verify if it is true or not.

If it is only one person who has brought the accusation, one must just keep it in mind and not spread it. Most likely it is false. If more bring it, then an investigation should occur to verify it.

You will have times when people will bring you ‘news’ of someone. Be careful of what you believe and what you spread.

Do not spread sinful or bad action information to anyone without verifying it. Don’t even entertain the thoughts, unless several bring it up in the same way.

As a believer, you are to work at building other believer up, not tearing them down with gossip. Entertaining an accusation can be gossip, a sin God hates.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that God will give you discernment on what is truth; that you will put down any gossip you may hear; that you will speak God’s word in truth; and that God will guide you in how to deal with sinful issues in the church or home.
