Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 1 Corinthians 11:28
It is easy for people to examine other people and see faults in others. The eyes of a person look outward, rather than inward. People are quick to judge others, instead of looking at themselves.
Doctors will often tell people to examine themselves. This is done to catch a problem while it is little and before it becomes a major problem. The more a person looks at himself, the faster he will notice things that may be wrong and be able to find a way to correct it.
Right after talking about taking the Lord’s supper, Paul tells the people to examine themselves before taking the meal.
Eating of the Lord’s supper was a thing that Jesus told the disciples to do, in order that they may remember what He had done for them.
People in churches often take the communion elements out of habit or tradition, but not really seeing what it means. They do not want to really look at themselves and examine where they are at. Personal sins are often overlooked or ignored.
Focus is usually on other people, rather than self. When people closely examine themselves, they will often find faults in themselves. It makes them look bad, which no one really wants to do. Most people want to see themselves as good, rather than face the truth.
Every believer should take time on a regular basis to closely examine himself. Examining what he is thinking, his motives, his desires, his idols, his faults, his walk with God, his growth and more.
As he finds faults, he must be willing to repent and change. This is done out of remembering what Jesus did for him, dying on the cross for his sins.
Take time out in your day to day living to really examine your heart and life. Ask yourself hard questions on how well are you really living for God, living as Jesus did in complete surrender to the Father.
Allow yourself to be brutally honest with yourself in how you compare yourself to Jesus. There is always room for improvement. Do this knowing what Jesus went through for you, so that you may have eternal life.
Do not trample on the death of Christ, but change and live for God.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that God will reveal faults in your life; that you will compare yourself to Jesus; that God will open your eyes to your true heart and motives; and that God will give you strength to change and make the right choices.
