Paul look straight at the Sanhedrin and said, “My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day.” Acts 23:1
When a person hears the term ‘duty’, he often thinks of someone in the military or someone in a service position. Those in those positions are expected to have and fulfill a duty of service towards or for others.
To some degree, every person has a duty to fulfill. Most have a duty to work and pay their bills. Others have a duty to care for family members. All have a duty to take care not to harm others around them.
Paul was being tried by the Sanhedrin for preaching the gospel message. The first thing he tells them that he has fulfilled his duty to God as far as he can tell.
Every believer has the same duties that the world has, plus more. There is one duty that rises above every other duty on this earth–their duty towards God.
From the beginning of creation, God called men and women to a duty of service and relationship. Every person is called to a duty of having and building his relationship with God. In the process of building that relationship and out of love for God, he has a duty to obey every command of God–the service.
These two go hand in hand and cannot be separated. Jesus came to save people for these duties. In the process of obeying God, one will turn from sin, be a witness, and disciple new believers. This is fulfilling all that Jesus came to accomplish upon this earth.
Believers must examine themselves and see if they are actually fulfilling their duty to God. If they are not fulfilling it, they are fulfilling the duty to this world and sin.
As a believer, God has called you also to build your relationship with Him and to obey Him. He has a job for you to do upon this earth. It may be completely different then those around you, or very similar, but it is one that only you can accomplish.
Part of that duty is in building your relationship with Him. The other part is to be His witness and do His work upon this earth while you can. Ask yourself if you have fulfilled your duty to God in all good conscience. If not, it is time to start.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will grow closer to God each day; that you will be His witness; that you will disciple others in Jesus; and that you will fulfill your duty to God.
