After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” Genesis 15:1
Rewards are something that a person gets for doing something good. They are coveted by many people. Often the work being done, is done in order to get reward. People want to be recognized for their work.
What the reward is can be different and diverse as the there are people. Rewards can be money, a plaque, a key, one’s picture posted up on a wall, a piece of metal, or one of many other things.
The reward can also be non-physical things, such as the satisfaction of a job well done, the joy on someone else’s face, peace, or safety. Many people find their reward in joy in knowing that they had accomplished something or helped someone else.
None of these rewards are necessarily good or bad, they are just rewards that people get. However, there is one reward that a person can get that supersedes all other rewards.
Abram had successfully rescued his nephew Lot from some kings. He was offered a great monetary reward, but he turned it down. When he turned it down, God stepped in an told Abram to not be afraid, that He was his very great reward.
The greatest reward a person can ever get is God, Himself. Having God in one’s life is the best that a person can get. God is eternal and perfect love. He is all-powerful and in control. When God is a person’s reward, he does not need to fear, he has absolutely everything that he could ever want or need. The person has the best thing possible.
Every person has the ability to have God as his reward. All he must do is believe in and follow Jesus. God will then become his very great reward. With that reward comes peace, joy, and eternal life. There is no other need that a person will ever have.
As you are going through this life, do not look for the rewards that people give, but look to the reward God is willing to give you. He gives Himself to you. Having God in your life is more than you will ever need. God will provide for more than any other reward given.
Are you satisfied with having God as your very great reward?
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know what you have in Jesus; that God will be all that you need; that you will know God as your very great reward; and that God will remove all fear in your life.
