Hebrews 5:14 Infant Or Mature

Grandpa and baby

But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:14

A new born child needs his mother’s milk for the first few months to year of his life. As he grows more mature, he moves on to eating soft foods. By the time he is eight to nine years old, he is able to eat all types of food, vegetables, meats and pastas. His body has changed so that he can eat more. This allows him to get the greater nutrition with a larger body.

If a child stays with just drinking milk as he gets older, he will miss out the much needed nutrition from the other foods. He will miss out many different vitamins and minerals. His growth will stop. Doctor’s will try to find out the cause for malnutrition.

People who become believers need to mature also. There have been many people who have not matured, but remained an infant in their belief of God and their walk with Him.

Salvation starts with just repenting of sins and believing Jesus has forgiven those sins. That is the very basics of the Bible and the message God has for all people.

However, there is much more to a believer’s life, once he is forgiven and accepted by God. He must learn to grow in Christ. Learning to hear God’s voice and obey His voice. Learning what is sin and what is not. Learning to turn away from every sin. Learning how to trust God with every area of one’s life. Understanding all that God has to say in the Bible. Learning how to be His witness in every situation and to every person he meets.

The person who does not grow in these areas and more, is still an infant. There are problems. He is not learning to distinguish good from evil and is still being ruled by this world.

Regardless of how long you have been a believer, you need to show growth in becoming more mature in your walk with God. Are you trusting God more today than when you first believed? Do you know more of His word than when you first believed? Are you doing more for Him than when you first believed?

If you cannot answer positively all of these and more, then there may be a problem. You may still be an infant, who is sick. Are you an infant or mature believer?

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will learn more of God each day; that God will reveal more of what is sin to you each day; and that you will grow to be more like Jesus each day.
