Luke 12:35 Be Dressed And Ready

Dressed and ready

Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, Luke 12:35

Jesus is teaching the crowds about various topics. He had just finished telling them not to worry about anything. Now He tells them to be dressed ready for service and to keep their lamps burning. They are to be servants that the master can leave alone, knowing that they will do what they are supposed to do and not slack off on the job.

Everyday millions of people get up and get ready to go to work. Each one may start at different times of the day or night, but each do very similar things to get ready.

Each person must get up and get dressed for work. Depending upon what type of workplace a person works in, depends on what he wears. The person working in an office may have to wear a suit and tie, while the construction worker wears steel-toed boots and jeans.

Along with being dressed, each person must be willing to work. They have to remember what they need to do and how to do it. They need to do their best on the job, with a positive attitude to get the best possible pay raises.

Not everyone goes to work in this way. Some refuse to dress for the position. Others have a poor attitude or try to slack off on getting the work done correctly. They are not ready to work.

Believers have to also get dressed and be ready to be a worker for God with the correct attitude.

It is not the outward clothing that a believer must be dressed with. It is the characteristics of Jesus and His righteousness that a person must be clothed with. He must have compassion, love, truth, faithfulness, whole hearted, and more. Anything that makes him look like Jesus is clothing that is important.

He must also keep the lamp burning. Be filled with God’s Holy Spirit, ready to serve God and others. Walk and work in His power and might. Be excited about sharing the gospel message. Know that God is faithful.

These are things that you, as a believer, must have on to be ready for service each day. Look at your life in a mirror and see if you look like Jesus.

Are you dressed with the righteousness of Jesus?

Is your lamp light and shining bright in this world?

I pray today that you will be dressed like Jesus; that you will be ready to serve God and others; that you will do the work God has called you to do; and that you will be a witness to this world of Jesus.

Ephesians 4:22-24 Put Off Your Old Self

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24

When some people accept Jesus into their lives, they feel that they are now saved and nothing more needs to be done. They continue to live life the same way that they always have. However, Paul points out that there must be a change.

The old way of life is life being lived without God in the picture. That life appears to be a great life–being fun and free, doing what one wants to do. Yet, it is corrupted. That life is filled with death. Just as a single cancer cell spreads through a body and eventually can kill it, so does the sinful life slowly spread through the whole body killing it.

You are to put of that old self. You are to turn away from your old sinful habits. The best way to do that is to renew your mind. Instead of thinking like the world does in what is in it for me, think about what is in it for God and others. Think about what does God want for you right now.

When you start thinking about what God wants for you, you will then start living like God does. You are to live a life that mirrors the life of Jesus. You are to live a life that is truly righteous and holy.

Every believer is to be holy. To be holy is to live your life without sin in it. Only Jesus can take away the sin, but once He has removed it, don’t pick it back up again. Live the life Jesus did.

Do not allow any more corruption in your life. Renew your mind and live for God. It is an abundant life that the world cannot give you.

I pray today that God will guide you in renewing your mind; that you will turn away from your old self; that you will live a righteous and holy life for God; and that God will guide you in how to live your life for Him.

Romans 15:5 Attitude Of The Mind

“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had” Romans 15:5

The attitude of the mind can make or break a person. It can be the difference between accomplishing something or giving up. Paul is asking that God may give each believer the same attitude toward each other that Jesus had.

What was the attitude that Jesus had towards others people? It was one of love, compassion, and serving. Jesus showed love towards the Samaritan woman at the well who was living in adultery. He showed compassion to many who were sick. He served the apostles by washing their feet when it was not His duty to do so.

Doing these things are not always easy to do. God will give the endurance and encouragement to do them. The encouragement is to help you want to do these things. When you look at all that God and Jesus has done for you, it becomes an encouragement to do the same for others.

God will also give you the needed endurance. It is time-consuming and energy burning to love and serve other people. This is especially true for those who are not receptive of that love and service, or to those who are abusive in some way. God will give you the strength to keep going forward when everything in you wants to quit.

Jesus went all the way through extreme persecution to the point of death on the cross in His love, compassion, and service for you. His mind was set on the end, not the current troubles and challenges. Imagine how exhausted He was as He was still going to the cross. Yet, it was a joy for Him to do what He was doing, because He knew it was God’s desire and He loved everyone.

Ask God today how you can show love, compassion, and service to others today. Don’t just show it to other believers, but to everyone, including the unlovely God-haters. Put on the mind that Jesus had and accept the encouragement and endurance God is willing to give you.

I pray today that God will strengthen you to love and serve others; that you know the attitude of the mind of Jesus; that your mind will be the same as that of Jesus; that your attitude will be a correct one in everything you do; and that Jesus will draw many to Himself through you.

Hebrews 4:12 The Living Word

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

At the beginning of all creation God spoke a Word and all of creation came into existence. Since then His Word is still alive and active. When a person starts speaking God’s Word things happen. The enemies of God will get angry and nervous because God’s Word has an effect on them. It will cut right to the heart, even though they will deny it. If a person is not speaking God’s Word the world will not care at all, but watch out as soon as you speak His Words.

God’s Word is likened to a sword here. A sharp double-edged sword will cut through everything. God’s Word will also cut through everything. His Word will even cut through the attitudes of the heart. How often do we do something God in the name of God, just to look good to others, to show others how “good” a Christian we are? Many rich people give millions of dollars every year for charity. On the outside it looks good, but many are doing it just for the sake of getting a tax write-off. Their giving to charity is for the wrong reasons and God’s Word will reveal it–remember: we are to do all we do for the glory of God…not ourselves.

Read the Bible every day and you will see it cut to the heart of the matter in every area of your life. Use the Word of God as a measure to see how you are living for God. Even though it was written nearly 2,000 years ago, it is still alive and active. God’s Word knows you right where you are today and how to deal with every situation in your life.

I pray that today God will give you a desire to read His Word more; that God will reveal more of Himself through His Word; that God will reveal any changes in your life that you need to make through His Word; and that God will give you wisdom in correctly using His Word in your life.
