And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. Matthew 18:9
Having eyes is something that is very important to a person. It allows for one to be able to see and read.
A very large portion of media is built around the concept of being able to see. In today’s society there is a way to see nearly anything and everything that a person may want to see. People are willing to watch anything at any cost.
Jesus tells the people that if one has an eye that causes him to stumble, it is better to cut it out and throw it away. This prevents being cast into the fire of hell.
In the eyes of the world anything can be seen with no apparent consequences. Violence and pornography can be viewed very easily and all the time. People think that it is acceptable to see such things.
Along with viewing these things and more, the eyes also can cause jealousy, greed, and lust, all sins against God and others. Yet, people watch all of these things for pleasure.
Believers who allow their eyes to view sin and cause them to sin, are in danger of being cast into hell. Every believer is to flee all sin, rather than partake in sin. If viewing something is leading a person into sin, then it would be better to physically cut out the eye and cast it away, than to burn in hell for eternity.
God hates all sin in a person or a believer. The believer must do whatever it takes to keep from sin at any cost, including his eyes.
As you go through your days, ask yourself what are you willing to view with your eyes. Everything that you purposefully view should bring you closer to God. Anything that does not bring you closer to God should be rejected.
If you struggle with what you are viewing, be willing to do what it takes to stop. This is so important that Jesus said to even gouge the eye out.
Seek God and His Holy Spirit to give you strength to overcome the evil viewing. He will show you a way out that does not include gouging out the eye, but that is how important it is to God.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will only look at things that draw you closer to God; that God will give you strength to not look at things that lead you into sin; and that God will guide you to turn away from all sin.
