2 Kings 2:9 More For God

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. 2 Kings 2:9

Over the years there have been occasions where a wealthy person or a person of high position offers his help to someone with a blank check. The person will ask someone in need if there is anything that he can do for him, and really mean anything.

The person being asked has been given a blank check to ask for whatever he wants at the time. Some of those that are offering it, mean anything and are good on their word at doing it. What people ask for is a very wide variety of things. While many ask for a certain amount of money, others will ask for help or something else.

Elisha had been following and learning under Elijah for some time. As Elijah was about to be taken away by God, he offered to do anything for Elisha. The one thing that Elisha wanted was a double portion of his spirit.

The spirit of Elijah was one of total, sold-out service and dedication to God. He was able to hear from God directly and God did great things through him.

Often when asked what a person wants, most people are thinking of physical and temporary things, money, food, housing, cars, or something like that. Seeking to have a heart after God is greater than anything else. It shows faithfulness and dedication to God. It shows trust in God. It allows God to use the person in mighty ways, greater than could be dreamed up.

The purpose of Elijah’s spirit was to serve God and do what He wants and desires. Believers today can have that same spirit and now with God’s Spirit in them also. Through God and His Holy Spirit believers can do more now than ever before.

Jesus has opened the door for you to have His Spirit in you. He wants to give you a double portion, just as Elijah gave Elisha. His Holy Spirit will guide you and lead in you in the paths of righteousness and God’s ways.

As you trust in God and are led by His Spirit, you will do greater things than anyone else can. No money or things in this world can achieve what His Spirit can.

What are you seeking for today?

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will have God’s Spirit in you; that you will serve God to build His kingdom; and that your life will be dedicated to serving God.
