2 Timothy 4:3 Itching Ears

Plugging ears

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 2 Timothy 4:3

Belief in something is something that most people want, but don’t know what to believe in. The world says that anything can be truth, unless it goes against one person believes as truth. Then it must be false.

Individuals around the world are giving up on any type of doctrine and throwing out all of Christianity or lumping it in with all other religions as equal. In the process of rejecting doctrines of the church, they make their own personal doctrine that rejects God or rejects what He has said.

People only want to hear what sounds good and search for someone who will speak that way. This even occurs within the church. Many people have left the church because the pastor or someone else in the church spoke out against a sin being done. People want to hear about the love of God and about His grace and mercy, but refuse to listen to what God says they should not do. They do not want to believe that they have sin.

Paul calls this people are listening to what their itching ears want to hear. They will not be satisfied until their ears are scratched with ‘good’ words.

Believers are not to fall into that type of thinking. They are to have a solid, true doctrine based on God and His word. True doctrine will last the test of time and fads. Many things may change, but the core belief in Jesus and His word must never change. Rejection of sin in one’s life must be a goal.

Take time to seriously look at what you believe and why you believe it. Is it based on God’s word or is it just based on the words of some person?

Do not allow yourself to be led astray seeking to hear only good words from a speaker. Be open to hear the whole word of God, not just about love and grace. Hear about the need to reject sin in your life and to change to live more for God every day.

Ensure that your doctrine is sound and based upon God’s word. Keep yourself pure and free from sinful ways and doctrines.

I pray today that you will know what God’s word says to you; that you will know the whole truth of God’s word; that you will not reject parts of God’s word in your life; and that you will live your life holy unto God.

  1. Oh my goodness this is so true. We dismiss things the Bible teaches us because they have become so commonplace in the world around us. Some of us have lost our individuality and began to follow the crowd and not the good crowd either. Keep speaking the truth brother. There are still people out there who are weeding through the pretty words searching for the Truth no matter how hard the path is. Jesus said the path was narrow, he never said it was pretty.

    1. Amen. It is a sad but true truth. Thank you for reading and the kind words. I always pray that my words will always be true.
