Mark 4:3 Sowing The Seed

Scattering Seed

“Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.” Mark 4:3

As was common for Jesus, He began to teach another parable. This one is about a farmer going out and sowing some seed. The seed falls in different places and has various results as to its growth or lack of growth.

During the time of Jesus the method of sowing seed was to carry a bag of seed into the field. The farmer would take handfuls of that seed and scatter it all over the field as he walked along. There was often very little pattern in where the seeds would land.

In modern times, when a farmer is planting a large field of produce, machines are often used to lay out the seeds. It is a very precise planting of the seeds. This is to keep the produce in set rows and at a correct distance from each other to maximize the growth pattern.

A lot of care is placed in preparing the field for the planting. Rocks and weeds are removed. The area is leveled out to be ready for the seeds. Compost and pesticides are often spread out first.

For the average person planting a small garden the same preparation takes place. However, instead of using machines to plant the seeds, they are planted by hand in specific rows and spacing.

The seeds that Jesus was talking about is not just plant seeds, but the word of God. Believers are to go out and scatter the seeds of the word of God wherever they go.

Often some believers will not talk about the gospel message with certain people because they believe the people would not hear it at all. The will tend to be quiet about their belief.

As a believer you must be willing to scatter your seed anywhere and everywhere. You do not know where that seed will take root and sprout and produce a great crop.

If you pick and choose where you will scatter, you will not scatter much seed. Along with that you will not see a great harvest.

The more you spread the gospel message, the better chance of seeing people turn to Jesus. The better chance you will have of seeing the gospel message spreading and God’s kingdom growing.

Do not be afraid of scattering small messages of the gospel. God can work with those seeds. Scatter God’s seed everywhere.

I pray today that God will strengthen you to share the gospel message; that God will show and increase in the growth of your seeds; and that God’s kingdom will grow because of your sowing.
