Proverbs 26:17 In The Wrong Business

Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own. Proverbs 26:17

Grabbing a dog, any dog, by the ears is not usually a good thing to do. Only an extremely well-trained dog will allow that to be done. Doing that to a wild stray dog, will most likely get a person bit very quickly. And that is understandable, because being grabbed by the ears is definitely annoying and can be painful. The dog is just protecting his own.

A lot of people like to do something that is just a dangerous as grabbing a stray dog by the ears. They like to jump into a quarrel that is not their own. People see a dispute between two others, and often will jump in to try to solve the issue, or defend one of the sides. This type of action is often done without the permission of either side.

When people jump in, they very seldom know all the details of either side of the issue. They only see a part and that from the outside of the issue. Doing this will get one or both sides angry with a person. As that occurs, a new fight will have begun.

Wars have begun between two different nations, because a third nation jumped into the battle without being asked to do so. Wars between two people can happen in the same way.

Some may want to say that they are just trying to stop a quarrel and are there to help out. While this may be true, it does not happen unless, at least one or both parties are willing to let it happen. Most people who are in a battle with someone do not want a third person involved. They want to be in control of their own lives and solve it themselves.

At the times that you see a quarrel between two people, the best thing you can do is pray for their peace and understanding of each other. Ask if you can get involved, but be willing to stay out of it. Seek God’s direction and wisdom in what to do. Don’t just jump in and try to be superman and save the world, it may backfire.

Don’t grab the dog by the ears.

I pray today that you will seek God’s wisdom and direction; that you will not be involved in third-party quarrels; and that you will show God’s love and wisdom to those you are around.
