As the water of a lake dries up or a riverbed becomes parched and dry, so he lies down and does not rise; till the heavens are no more, people will not awake or be roused from their sleep. Job 14:11-12
Job is requesting that God remove His hand from his life. He wanted God to look away from him so that he would no longer be in trouble and be tormented. While feeling this, he felt that he had less hope than a tree that dies. A tree that dies leaves seeds behind that grow a new tree. A person who dies is done and can never live again.
During the Old Testament times, there was no hope of life after death. The focus was to live for God while on this earth and be blessed during that time. Once a person died, everything was over, there was no more hope.
The world believes this same way. A person is to live by eating, drinking and partying, because tomorrow they die and all is over. Most of the world believes that once a person dies there is no more life to be found.
Evolutionists paint the picture of survival of the fittest. Only the strong will survive, but only until they die, then it is over. It is a dreary, worthless way of living.
When life is looked at in this manner, it is easy to see why Job wanted God to remove His hand from him. He wanted to be able to live life and enjoy it while alive here on this earth. When he died it would be over.
Jesus had changed all of that. He said that He had come to give life abundantly. Jesus not only comes to give life, He is life itself. Without Jesus there is no life, no reason for living.
As a human being, there will come a day when you will die. Everyone in the world knows that they will die. The difference is that if you follow Jesus, even though you may die, you will live. Your body will be resurrected.
This gives you hope beyond today. It gives you purpose for living, in spite of all the troubles of this life. It gives you something to focus on and aim for. You do not have to live in despair with no hope as Job did.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your savior; that you will have hope in Jesus; that you will not fear death; and that God will fill you with abundant life.
Meaningless, meaningless is living for the flesh, but sometimes we grow weary of waiting for deliverance. But waiting on God is always worth the wait. Good reminder to hope in Jesus.
As the old song goes “it will be worth it all when we see Jesus!”.
