Exodus 40:36-37 Following God’s Lead

“In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; but if the cloud did not life, they did not set out–until the day it lifted.” Exodus 40:36-37

Once the Israelites had the tabernacle built and all the furnishings put in it, God’s presence came upon it in the form of a cloud. God would begin to lead them by a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire during the night. They would break camp and start moving only when the cloud would lift from the tabernacle. That was God’s sign for them to start moving on again in their travels. If the cloud did not move, they would not move.

Everywhere you go, you will find people who claim to follow God. They will go to church every Sunday and do not doing any acts that are extreme sins on purpose. They appear to be really good Christian people. Yet, they are not always going where God is trying to lead them.

Few believers actually seek God for direction in their day-to-day life. God’s direction is sought only when things get rough and there is trouble in the path. Most people think that they understand the path God has them on.

As a human your vision is very short. It is only what is immediately in front of you. You cannot see around the corner. Only God can see what is ahead. Often people get a vision from God and then run ahead of Him to get it fulfilled.

The Israelites were given a vision of going into the land of Canaan, yet they were not to do so for many years. They had to wait upon God’s move for them to move forward.

Every moment of everyday you should be seeking God’s direction. You need to be walking by His side, not Him trying to keep up with you. Only when God moves, should you move.

When do you decide to move?

Is it on your own experience?

Or is it when God begins to move?

I pray today that God will open your eyes to what He is doing; that you will not move unless God is moving; that you will follow in the footsteps of God each day; that God will guide your every step by His Holy Spirit; and that you will remain on the path God has for you.

  1. As the pace of our 21st century lives continues to increase, it’s hard to remain patient and to wait. Your post is a great reminder that we don’t need to follow the world’s example of frantic activity for the sake of activity. What is not lead by God is worthless, no matter how busy we can appear.
