“If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.” 1 John 1:6
In America, and probably many other places around the world, there are many people who claim to be Christian. They claim to have a relationship with Jesus. Just a few years ago it was even acceptable and expected for a person to be a Christian. Yet, John states that just because you claim to have that relationship with Jesus does not automatically mean that you really do have that relationship with Him.
People treat their relationship with Jesus very much like they treat their relationship with other people…here today, gone tomorrow. They are in and out of relationships almost on a daily basis. I love him or her today, then the next day comes and I am in love with someone else.
Relationships are also treated as to “what can I benefit from this relationship,” rather than, “what can I bring into this relationship”.
Being in a relationship with someone means spending time with that person, communicating with that person, and doing what that person desires. This is no different with your relationship with Jesus.
Many people claim to have a relationship with Jesus, yet, do not do what He wants. They live in sin. They are walking in darkness. When you live in sin, you are in darkness, because God cannot be around sin and He is the source of all light.
Jesus is the light and truth of this world. When you walk in His truth and ways, you will be walking in His light. Any other place you walk will be in darkness.
John hits this hard, he states that by even saying to claim to be with Jesus and yet continue to purposely sin, you are a liar. You really do not have a relationship with Him. Only if you walk in His light and truth will you have a relationship with Jesus.
Where are you walking today?
Are you walking in darkness, living in sin?
Or are you walking in the light, living for and serving Jesus, following His commands?
I pray today that God will reveal your relationship with Jesus; that God will shine His light on any darkness in your life; that you will serve God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength; that God will help you turn away from all sin; and that you will have a relationship with Jesus.
