John 2:17 What Consumes You

“His disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for your house will consume me.” John 2:17

Jesus went into the temple courts and found many people selling things in there. It had become more of a marketplace than a place of worship. He gets angry with the people and drives them out of there. At that point the disciples remembered a verse from Psalm 69:9 that zeal for God’s house would consume Him.

Many people get excited about many different things. They allow their time to be used for various things in their life. Often they are hobbies that they enjoy doing. Others get a joy with their work.

This excitement is usually taken to an extreme, to the point where they are consumed with it. They will spend all their time and money on that hobby. Some of those hobbies might be hunting, gaming, golfing, watching sports, or something else enjoyed.

While none of these are bad things to do, a person should not be consumed with them. One should not spend all their waking moments doing one thing.

The one thing that should consume a person is being in God’s presence. In order to be in God’s presence, you must be in the temple that He is in.

The world has many temples everywhere you go. There are temples built to everything you can imagine: jobs, hobbies, sports, friends, homes, and more.

You are the temple of God if you allow God to dwell there. Fleeing and repenting of all sin will allow God to dwell in you. Worship God wherever you are, not just in church on Sunday.

Be consumed with the need to keep God’s temple pure and holy for Him. Do not allow it to become defiled and dirty. Put the time into it as many put time into their favorite hobbies.

Keep your focus on God and His holiness and righteousness. Live the righteous live that Jesus has provided you.

Whose house/temple are you consumed with today?

I pray today that God will draw you closer to Him; that you will have zeal for what God has zeal for; that you will keep God’s house pure and holy; that God will make His dwelling in you; and that God will use you to build His kingdom.
